Youth Rugby

Wheat Ridge Youth Rugby
The sport of rugby has come to Wheat Ridge! Wheat Ridge Parks and Recreation, working in conjunction with Rugby Colorado, provides a recreational rugby experience for players from Wheat Ridge and the surrounding area. Coach Jim Nelon draws upon his 30 plus years of coaching experience while overseeing all levels of Wheat Ridge Rugby. Coach Jim’s passion for the game is shared by other superb coaches as well, including John Edwards, also a 30-year veteran of rugby. The easy going nature of our coaching staff creates an atmosphere that is both fun and supportive; an environment where newcomers will learn the game while more experienced players can continue to hone their skills.
Recreational Clinic
Each spring the Parks and Recreation Department offers a coed introductory rugby clinic for boys and girls interested in exploring the sport of rugby. The clinic balances physical activity with fun games while slowly immersing kids into the rules of play, unique lingo and good-sportsmanship philosophy of the game. See Youth Camps, Clinics and Events or Recreation Activity Guides for information on current clinics.

Rugby League Rugby U7 Touchdown
Organized play is available in the springtime through the Wheat Ridge Parks and Recreation Department. Boys and girls are invited to join Wheat Ridge Rugby and enjoy recreational league play via the Rugby Colorado TRY League. Teams can be formed for both boys and girls ages 5 through 17. Coed teams are also an option for most of the younger age groups. The TRY season typically begins in early May with two weeks of weeknight practices prior to the start of Saturday games, which run from mid-May through June. Practices take place twice per week with Saturday “rugby jamborees” throughout the metro area.
Age Groups
  • Teams 7 and under are flag only (no tackling).
  • Teams up to age 12 may or may not be coed and have the option to play flag or tackle (coaches and parents determine whether or not a team is ready for tackle rugby).
  • U7 teams are five per side with older teams playing seven per side.
Current Programs and Class Registration
Registration for the Rugby Program is published in the Spring/Summer Activities Guide with registration beginning in mid-February each year. View the current Activities Guide at Recreation Activity Guides.
